history of psychiatry (part 5)

William Battie (1703-1776)

was the first physician who made insanity his full work. He wrote a book named "a treatise of madness"...

Johann Reil (1759-1813)

was the first to use the word PSYCHIATRY, and founded the first psychiatric journal. He is considered the founder of rational psychotherapy, recognizing the therapeutic value of institutional surroundings, music, psychodrama, and occupational therapy. He published "Rhapsodies about the application of psychotherapy to mental disturbances (1803)".

hahaha, oh Dr. Al Bedri, that is tooo good, a psychiatrist named "Dr. Battie", how perfect...! It's pretty hilarious when you think about it...

About another Dr. (my "book crush"), an interesting site to visit is Gwande.com Under misc, at the very bottom of the page is a slide show, i think it is called something like "Atul Gwande Rocks the OR"...i love the picture of him playing "hang man" whilst waiting for results from pathology. It makes me smile to think about it, for some reason. I can't help but think it must be kind of fun at times to be on his team. In his books he comes across as not only a very precise and excellent surgeon, but kind and caring as well (like you!). Several years ago, I saw him on television, reading from his first book and he just had an aura of compassion about him. There, how's that for a bit of rambling or in your "language" stream of conciousness (can't spell it!). take care, tracy

Dear Dr. Al Bedri,

i really have no answer for you except to say that i have been fascinated by the field of medicine and health care ever since i was a child, with my "Junior Nurse" lunch box...how sad a memory is that? i started out college in nursing, but that was right after all the bad depression and anxiety had begun (yes, you can print this) and i found it too hard to concentrate on the more difficult subjects...so here i am, all these years later, just an admiring bystander. i love to read all kinds of books by doctors, as you know and blogs as well. The closest i got in real life to the health world was nurse's aide and emt. Oh, well...

and about Dr. Battie, I would n e v e r make fun of the world of psychiatry, it saved my life...i just need to keep a sense of humor about it all :-) and his name just charmed me...!

take best of care, tracy thank you for all you do.
